Anglo-Norman Towns in Ireland: foundations and transformations
Irish Historic Towns Atlas seminar 2027

The Irish Historic Towns Atlas (IHTA) annual seminar takes place at the Royal Irish Academy and runs since 2008. In 2027, the seminar takes place on 19–20 May and marks the Year of the Normans, contributing to the wider programme of events.

Organised by the IHTA at the Royal Irish Academy in association with the Irish Walled Towns Network, an initiative of the Heritage Council, the seminar focuses on the development of Anglo-Norman towns in Ireland. The theme aligns closely with the research scope of the IHTA, which examines urban development across time.

Many towns featured in the IHTA series—including Dublin, Cork, Trim, Drogheda, Carlingford, Athlone and Sligo—emerge as important urban centres during the Anglo-Norman period. The publication of IHTA No. 33: New Ross (Linda Doran) in 2027 provides a timely opportunity to explore the foundations and transformations of these towns from an urban-historical perspective.

The Irish Historic Towns Atlas is a research programme of the Royal Irish Academy. It traces urban growth and changes through detailed atlas publications, each dedicated to a specific place and combining text, maps, views and photographs.

Convened in association with the Irish Walled Towns Network, Heritage Council

Irish Historic Towns Atlas is part of the wider European Historic Towns Atlas, governed by the International Commission for the History of Towns
