Carrick Hill Finds Exhibition

from 01 January 2027

to 31 December 2027

Norman Archaeological finds exhibit

A significant new heritage initiative, this exhibition will present a curated display of Norman archaeological finds from Carrick Hill, the site of Ireland’s first Norman fortification established under the command of Robert FitzStephen in 1169.

Developed in collaboration with the National Museum of Ireland, the exhibition will launch in 2027 at the Irish National Heritage Park, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the material culture of the earliest phase of Norman settlement in Ireland.

Wexford holds a central place in the story of the Norman invasion, serving as the primary landing point for Norman forces and the base from which they expanded their influence. Key figures such as Robert FitzStephen and Strongbow used the area as a strategic foothold, shaping the political, military, and cultural development of the region in the centuries that followed.

Through carefully selected artefacts, interpretation, and contextual displays, the exhibition will illuminate this transformative period in Irish history. Visitors will gain insights into early Norman fortifications, daily life, trade, and military practices, as well as the lasting legacy of Norman activity still evident in Wexford’s architecture, landscape, and place names.
