The Ferns Tapestry
Meet the Makers of the Ferns Tapestry

In the heart of historic Ferns, a group of talented local community members came together to create a remarkable tribute to their town’s rich heritage: the Ferns Tapestry. This stunning 15-metre-long work of crewel embroidery on Irish linen comprises 25 beautifully detailed panels that tell the story of Ferns from the Iron Age through the arrival of Saint Aidan in 598 AD, right up to the coming of the Normans.

Using traditional needlework skills passed down through generations, the makers — dedicated volunteers from the Ferns area — transformed historical research and local knowledge into intricate stitches. Their collective effort captures key moments, landscapes, and figures from pre-Norman Ferns, including its time as the royal seat of Diarmait Mac Murchada, King of Leinster. What began as a community project has become a celebrated local cultural treasure, now proudly displayed in the visitor centre at Ferns Castle.

The Ferns Tapestry offers a powerful visual gateway to the world that existed just before the Norman arrival — a world of Gaelic kings, early Christian monasteries, and vibrant local life that would soon intersect dramatically with Norman ambition. The makers’ work not only preserves history in thread but also embodies the living spirit of community creativity and heritage pride in County Wexford.
