A contemporary tapestry depicting the life of Matilda of Flanders, by Olympe Ramakrishna

The Legend of Matilda is a contemporary monumental tapestry recounting the life of Matilda of Flanders in ten significant scenes. Created on linen and combining painting, textile printing, and embroidery, the work draws inspiration from both the Bayeux Tapestry and contemporary visual language.
Approximately ten meters long, this creation highlights a major female figure in Norman history, often overshadowed by that of her husband, William the Conqueror. A Flemish princess, Duchess of Normandy, Queen of England, patron, and woman of power, Matilda played an essential role in the consolidation of the duchy and in the epic that led to the conquest of England in 1066.

In a narrative and symbolic language, this tapestry invites the public to rediscover the life and legacy of Matilda of Flanders while opening a reflection on the place of women in history, their contribution to major events, and how their memory is transmitted over the centuries.

The work will be exhibited in Normandy, Flanders, the United Kingdom, and Guernsey in 2027.
