Rethink, Rework, Remake
Exploring Norman craft, textiles, heritage and legacy

Discover how Norman creativity inspires sustainable living today through this hands-on public event in Tramore Library.
Waterford Libraries and Europe Direct Waterford present a series of creative workshops that explore traditional Norman crafts and reinterpret them for a modern, sustainable world. Taking place on Thursday evenings, these sessions invite participants to learn, experiment, and create together.

The programme begins with an introduction to traditional tapestry and embroidery techniques, inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry. Participants explore and compare these historic methods with contemporary textile practices such as appliqué and modern embroidery, using both hand and machine techniques. Using recycled and preloved materials, they create their own textile samplers while discovering how craft traditions evolve over time.

Over the following sessions (February to May 2027), participants develop their own mini tapestries inspired by modern-day Tramore. Combining Norman techniques with contemporary creativity, these individual pieces come together to form the Tramore Library Tapestry — a unique community artwork reflecting today’s town through the lens of its shared heritage.

This project forms part of the European Year of the Normans 2027, linking local creativity with a wider European story, including connections with Normandy.
