The 50th Battle Conference on Anglo-Norman Studies

The Battle Conference on Anglo-Norman Studies was established in 1978 in Battle, Sussex. It is dedicated to the history and medieval culture of England and Normandy, with a particular focus on the 11th and 12th centuries. Its founding goal, defined by R. Allen Brown, is to enhance knowledge in all areas of Anglo-Norman history, including the Anglo-Norman world and the broader contributions of Old English and Scandinavian cultures to developments in Italy, Sicily, Spain, and in the context of the Crusades.

Over time, the conference has established itself as one of the leading international forums in this field. It has formed close ties with the Haskins Society in the United States and regularly brings together speakers and participants from the UK, France, and the USA. The conference actively supports young researchers through grants, a poster competition for doctoral candidates, as well as the annual Marjorie Chibnall Prize. The winner presents their work at the conference and publishes it in Anglo-Norman Studies, the official volume of proceedings.

In 2027, the 50th edition will take place from July 19 to 23 at the Abbaye aux Dames in Caen. The program includes ten scholarly presentations, guided tours of sites of historical interest, and a public question-and-answer session during which a panel of experts addresses audience queries about Normandy during the time of William the Conqueror.
