The Benedictine Way
from 13 September 2027
to 21 September 2027
The Benedictine Way proposes a multidisciplinary exhibition that brings together art, history, science, and faith. The exhibition takes place at several abbey sites in Normandy and runs in parallel with an exhibition presented at Norwich Cathedral in 2027.
Paintings specially commissioned from Gennadiy Ivanov are displayed alongside explanatory texts and complementary illustrations. The exhibition explores the enduring influence of Benedictine thought, highlighting its ecological and environmental wisdom, which remains at the heart of active communities such as the Abbey of Saint-Wandrille and Norwich Cathedral.
The program concludes at the Abbey of Saint-Wandrille with a two-day seminar bringing together international experts. Discussions focus on monastic history, the environmental impact of monastic settlements, the relationship between the environment and monastic life, as well as the effects of climate change on societies before, during, and after the Norman period.
Founded in 649, the Abbey of Saint-Wandrille is one of the first monasteries in Normandy to adopt the Rule of Saint Benedict. It precedes the Norman period, coexists with it, and extends beyond, thus offering a unique perspective through centuries of environmental and cultural transformations.
The exhibition highlights major historical climate phases, including the medieval warm period, which promoted agricultural growth, population expansion, and maritime activity contributing to Norman development. It also examines the Little Ice Age, characterized by climatic degradation, poor harvests, and social unrest throughout Europe.
These historical perspectives resonate with contemporary challenges. Modern societies face significant climate disruptions, such as floods, droughts, wildfires, and rising sea levels. Regions like Normandy and Norfolk are experiencing increasing environmental pressure, particularly on their coastlines.
The exhibition emphasizes the importance of responsible environmental management. It draws on Benedictine values of humility, balance, and sustainability, offering relevant insights to address current ecological issues.
Norwich Cathedral is actively developing sustainability initiatives, including the installation of solar panels, while Benedictine communities like that of Saint-Wandrille continue to embody sustainable practices in their daily lives. Academic partners contribute their scientific expertise, linking historical lessons to current environmental research.
