Carrickfergus Castle Daily Tours

Carrickfergus Castle stands on the shores of Belfast Lough as a major Anglo-Norman fortress, built by John de Courcy following his invasion of Ulster in 1177. Over more than 800 years, it undergoes multiple sieges and captures by Scottish, Irish, English, and French forces, including campaigns led by King John in 1210, Edward Bruce in 1315, Schomberg for William III in 1689, and the French under Thurot in 1760.

Hugh de Lacy expands the castle in 1227, developing it into a complex structure with inner, middle, and outer wards, including towers and a gatehouse. Over the centuries, the castle serves as a prison, an armoury, and an army base. It enters State Care in 1928 and later accommodates World War II air-raid shelters. Today, it remains one of the best-preserved medieval structures in Ireland.

The site operates as a popular visitor attraction, offering historical exhibitions, including restored cannons displayed within the keep.
