Castles, Mottes and Monasteries - Visual exploration
Exploring the archives of the Historic Environment Record of Northern Ireland and Northern Ireland Screen

The Norman arrival brings lasting changes to Ireland and leaves a strong legacy across Ulster. Today, many Norman monuments remain preserved in the landscape of Northern Ireland, including impressive castles such as Carrickfergus and Dundrum, monastic sites like Greyabbey and Inch Abbey, and defensive earthworks such as the mottes of Clough, Duneight and Dromore.

This event, created in collaboration between the Historic Environment Record of Northern Ireland (HERoNI) and Northern Ireland Screen, showcases a selection of these sites through archival images and film. The presentation highlights material featured in the HERoNI exhibition Castles, Mottes and Monasteries.

Speakers Brónagh McAtasney (Northern Ireland Screen) and Bronagh Murray (Historic Environment Division) lead this engaging talk and screening, offering insights into the region’s Norman heritage.
