Chew Valley Hoard Exhibition

Discover one of the most remarkable coin hoard finds unearthed in Britain. This special exhibition showcases the extraordinary Chew Valley Hoard - 2,584 silver coins buried at the moment of one of the most dramatic turning points in English history: the Norman Conquest.

Struck in the turbulent years around 1066, the hoard captures the power struggle between two rival kings. Nearly half the coins bear the image of Harold II, the last Anglo-Saxon ruler, while the rest depict William the Conqueror in the earliest coin designs issued after his coronation. Together, they tell a compelling story of conquest, authority, and identity at a time of profound national change.

Exceptionally rare and historically significant, the hoard includes unprecedented numbers of coins from both kings, transforming what we know about early Norman England. Each coin offers a glimpse into a tightly controlled medieval economy, where rulers used currency not only for trade but to project power and political messages.
