The echo of the centuries, chronicles of medieval Saint-Lô

from 02 April 2027

to 31 December 2027

The Museum of Art and History of Saint-Lô presents the exhibition The Echo of the Centuries – Chronicles of Medieval Saint-Lô, dedicated to the medieval past of the city.

Through an immersive journey, the public rediscovers a often-overlooked history: that of a once-prosperous and influential city, whose heritage remains visible in its urban planning, ramparts, monuments, and collective memory.

Designed as a journey through time, the exhibition relies on the stories of six characters from the 15th century — governor, bishop-builder, money masters, merchant, cloth maker, and religious figure — to reveal the many faces of the city: a fortified town, a religious center, and a commercial and artisanal hub.

A scenography inspired by comic books brings these stories to life through life-size characters, immersive settings, and a visual narrative that blends artworks, objects, costumes, and sensory and digital devices.

The overall experience is accessible, interactive, and suited for all audiences, with particular attention given to families and young visitors.

The exhibition also highlights the city's resilience in the face of wars, epidemics, and destruction, echoing contemporary issues of memory and identity.

A cultural program (workshops, tours, conferences, medieval gastronomy) extends the experience, while numerous works and objects from public collections — manuscripts, textiles, sculptures, archives — illustrate the richness of Normandy at the end of the Middle Ages.

Through this proposition, the museum invites visitors to rediscover Saint-Lô and to engage in a dialogue between past and present in a sensitive, educational, and deeply human approach.
