The succession of William the Conqueror

The Abbey of La Lucerne d’Outremer honors the Henr I Beauclerc Embroidery, a remarkable heritage work recently added to its collections.
Previously displayed in Villedieu-les-Poêles, this embroidery now joins an emblematic site of Norman heritage, conducive to its discovery and enhancement.

Made using the Bayeux stitch, it is part of the tradition of grand narrative embroideries and demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship. The work recounts a major episode in medieval history: the succession of William the Conqueror and the rivalries among his three sons — Robert Curthose, William Rufus, and Henry I Beauclerc — for the inheritance of the Duchy of Normandy and the Kingdom of England.
Through this embroidered fresco, an entire chapter of Norman and Anglo-Norman history unfolds, offering the public a lively and accessible reading of the political and familial stakes of the time.

This project aims to rediscover this work for the greatest number by highlighting its historical richness, its artistic dimension, and the strength of the narrative it carries. It thus contributes to transmitting and valuing an emblematic heritage, at the crossroads of history, art, and Norman identity.
