The Battle of Hastings: a new creation from Monnaie de Paris

Monnaie de Paris unveils a new creation dedicated to the Battle of Hastings, 960 years after this landmark event in the story of William the Conqueror.

On 14 October 1066, the troops of William, Duke of Normandy, face those of King Harold II at Hastings. The Norman victory paves the way for the conquest of England and William’s coronation a few months later.

William and Hastings on the two sides of the coin

The obverse of the coin depicts William, known as “the Conqueror”, about to be crowned William I, King of England. Seated on Edward the Confessor’s throne in Westminster Abbey, William holds a sceptre in his left hand, a symbol of royal power.

The reverse features a scene from the Bayeux Tapestry: Norman horsemen charge English foot soldiers on the hills of Sussex during the Battle of Hastings.

The collection is available in several versions: gold, silver and base metal.

An event ahead of Millenium

In 2027, Normandy will celebrate the millennium of William the Conqueror’s birth with Millenium.

To mark the occasion, Monnaie de Paris will unveil a collection in 2027 dedicated to William the Conqueror and the Viking conquests that shaped medieval Europe.
