L’Ornement comme crime to be exhibited at Westminster Abbey in 2027

From 1 May to 30 July 2027, Westminster Abbey will host L’Ornement comme crime, a contemporary tapestry conceived by artist Hélène Delprat as part of Millenium.

The tapestry will be presented as part of the exhibition “Crowning the Conqueror: New Threads from 1066.”

The 25 m² work depicts the coronation of William the Conqueror on 25 December 1066. It will be displayed in the medieval Chapter House at Westminster Abbey in London.

A symbolic location

The choice of Westminster directly echoes the subject of the work: it was at the Abbey that William the Conqueror was crowned King of England on 25 December 1066, following his victory at the Battle of Hastings.

Nearly 1,000 years later, contemporary art and history will come together in the very same place.

A work taking shape in Aubusson

Led by the Normandy Region, in partnership with Manufactures nationales – Sèvres & Mobilier national, the project is currently being produced in Aubusson.

The design was created by Hélène Delprat, and the tapestry is being woven by Atelier Tapisserie Guillot at the Cité internationale de la tapisserie.

Following its exhibition at Westminster Abbey, L’Ornement comme crime will travel to Falaise Castle, in William the Conqueror’s birthplace.
