Exeter Cathedral

The construction of a Cathedral in Exeter on the present site began in 1114. It was built in the Norman (Romanesque) style. The two towers and the lower part of the Nave walls survive in the present Cathedral.

Today, the cathedral’s two massive towers are among the clearest surviving features from the Norman period. Unlike many cathedrals, the towers are positioned above the transepts rather than at the west front, because the site already contained earlier Saxon structures.

During the 13th and 14th centuries, much of the cathedral was rebuilt in the Gothic style, creating the magnificent building seen today. However, the Norman towers were retained and incorporated into the newer design, making them some of the oldest surviving parts of the cathedral.

Exeter Cathedral is also famous for having the longest uninterrupted medieval vaulted ceiling in the world, as well as an impressive collection of historic carvings, stained glass and manuscripts that reflect centuries of religious and civic history in Exeter.
