Exhibition exploring the 12th century Church Reforms leading to the Mellifont Conspiracy (c. 1100-1228)
This special exhibition, created especially to mark 2027, European Year of the Normans explores the events surrounding the reform of the Irish church in the 12th century, a process that led to the arrival of the Continental Orders including the Cistercians and Augustinians.
The exhibition discusses the early establishment of those monastic houses and trace their expansion across the county with special emphasis on the Cistercian Order, noting specifically the foundation of two distinct branches: the Irish or Mellifont houses and the Anglo-Norman foundations. The Riot of Jerpoint in 1217 and the resulting period of unrest known as the Mellifont Conspiracy will feature prominently.
