Exploring Medieval Caen
10 April 2027
Guided Tour
From the esplanade of the town hall to the castle of Caen, this route dives into the heart of the medieval city and its history. The Abbey of Saint-Étienne, where William the Conqueror is buried, is the first stop on this discovery. The circuit continues through the streets of the old abbey town, searching for the traces of the stone quarries of Caen that provided the materials necessary for its construction.
As you walk through the historic center and its cobblestone alleys, several buildings inherited from the Middle Ages unfold, testifying to the prosperity of the city. The visit ends at the castle of Caen, whose imposing fortifications recall the major role it has played in the defense and organization of the city over the centuries.
