The Big Dig Adventure – The School of Irish Archaeology

Ferns Castle proudly hosts The Big Dig, an exciting hands-on archaeological event brought to you by The School of Irish Archaeology. Perfect for families, this lively experience invites young explorers to step into the boots of real archaeologists, right in the shadow of one of Ireland’s most iconic Norman strongholds.

Unearth History with Your Own Hands!

Imagine digging through a replica Viking house excavation site, brushing away soil to reveal hidden treasures and artefacts from over 1,000 years ago. Guided by expert archaeologists, participants learn proper excavation techniques while discovering what life was like for Ireland’s Vikings – their homes, tools, crafts, and daily adventures.

Ferns Castle is the Perfect Setting for the Big Dig. Built around 1200 by the powerful Norman leader William Marshal, it stands on ground rich with layered history. Before the Normans arrived, Ferns was the power base of Diarmait Mac Murchada, King of Leinster – the very place that helped spark the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169.

By hosting The Big Dig, Ferns Castle beautifully bridges the Viking, Gaelic Irish, and Norman worlds. While young diggers explore Viking life (a key part of the world the Normans encountered), they stand amid towering Norman walls that still echo with medieval stories. It’s living history at its most thrilling!

What to Expect at The Big Dig

- Hands-on excavation in a safe, supervised replica Viking house site.

- Exciting artefact finds – uncover replica treasures and learn their stories.

- Expert talks from real archaeologists who bring the past vividly to life.

Whether you’re a history buff, a curious child, or just looking for a memorable family day out, The Big Dig at Ferns Castle delivers laughter, learning, and lasting memories.
