Gateway to the Normans

European Master Planning & Mentorship for Dublinia

This project launches the European-supported master planning of Dublinia’s permanent exhibitions, which are over 30 years old. Dublin was one of the most important Norman cities of medieval Europe, and Dublinia is Ireland’s principal gateway for interpreting this shared heritage.

During the European Year of the Normans in 2027, Dublinia will develop a full masterplan for the future redevelopment of its Norman and medieval galleries through an EU-wide competitive tender.

The process will be supported by structured European and Irish mentorship, enabling Dublinia to learn directly from institutions that have recently completed similar transformations. A major Norman institution such as the Bayeux Tapestry Museum will be invited to act as a European twinning partner, while Irish sites, including the Norman Centre in New Ross and Kerry County Museum in Tralee, will be approached as mentor sites.

Through curated study visits, professional exchanges and shared working sessions, this project will ensure Dublinia’s future Norman galleries meet the highest European standards of interpretation, accessibility and visitor experience, leaving a lasting legacy beyond 2027.
