Gloucestershire’s Norman Churches

Discover a collection of charming Norman churches in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

Step off the beaten track and explore beautiful historic churches across Gloucestershire with Norman origins. Visitors spot distinctive architectural features and experience a sense of history in these peaceful sites set within the stunning Cotswolds landscape.

Gloucestershire features several well-presed Norman churches, all open to the public free of charge:

* St Nicholas of Myra, Ozleworth: Located along the Cotswold Way, this church is known for its unusual hexagonal tower from the Norman period. Visitors enter through an intricately carved Norman doorway decorated with leaf motifs.

* All Saints’ Church, Shorncote: A secluded rural church dating from around 1170. It features a classic Norman south doorway alongside Early English architectural elements.

* St Mary’s Church, Little Washbourne: Set within a quiet orchard with views across the Cotswolds. The church presents a simple Norman interior with traces of medieval wall paintings and later Georgian furnishings.

* St Oswald’s Tower, Lassington: Located just north of Highnam. Although most of the church was demolished in 1975, the lower stages of the surviving tower date from the late Saxon or very early Norman period.
