Traces, Uses, and Representations of Apples in the Medieval Nordic and Norman Worlds, 9th-16th Century

The aim of this scientific meeting is to examine the role of the apple in the medieval societies of Northern and Northwestern Europe (Scandinavia, England, Normandy) from the 9th to the 16th century.
 Adopting an interdisciplinary approach that combines history, archaeology, and literature, this study day focuses on the apple both as food and as a symbol, with contributions addressing not only the production, consumption, and culinary uses of apples but also the representations associated with them in various Scandinavian, English, and Norman sources.
By combining archaeological and textual data, the studies presented allow for an understanding of the apple in its material and abstract dimensions, thus fully aligning with the current issues in the cultural history of food, a field in which the contacts between Scandinavia, England, and Normandy are now beginning to be explored through the lens of transnational, connected, and comparative history methods.

 The goal is particularly to discuss the idea that Norman food culture would have quickly detached itself from Nordic food cultures, according to an old hypothesis regarding the immediate assimilation of Scandinavian populations to Frankish lifestyles after the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte in 911. While the Normans did quickly adopt the sociopolitical structures of the Franks, the same cannot be said for cultural models, for which the Franco-Scandinavian convergences deserve deeper exploration in the wake of the concept of "medieval Nordic and Norman worlds" developed in recent years at the Michel de Bouärd Center – CRAHAM.
