The Great Parchment Book of Waterford, a great medieval treasure of Ireland

This one-day conference celebrates the 20th anniversary of the publication of the English translation of the Great Parchment Book of Waterford, one of Ireland’s most important medieval treasures.

Organised by Waterford Treasures Museums in partnership with the Byrne Family and the Irish Manuscripts Commission, the conference explores medieval Ireland through the remarkable Great Parchment Book of Waterford, an exceptional municipal record. The programme also examines the manuscript within the wider context of medieval Irish artistic and manuscript traditions.

Originally translated by Dr Niall Byrne and published by the Irish Manuscripts Commission, the Liber Antiquissimus Civitatis Waterfordiae continues to offer invaluable insight into Ireland’s urban and cultural history.

Speakers include:

Brendan Smith (University of Bristol, keynote), Lynn Kilgallon (Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland), Pádraig Ó Macháin (University College Cork), Rachel Moss (Trinity College Dublin), Julian Walton (Dunhill Multi-Education Centre), David Edwards (University College Cork) and Eamonn McEneaney (Founder Director, Waterford Treasures).
