Guided Tours – Kells Priory
Visit Ireland's largest enclosed ecclesiastical site

Located in County Kilkenny, Kells Priory is Ireland’s largest enclosed ecclesiastical site and one of its most remarkable medieval landmarks. Guided tours offer an opportunity to explore this impressive complex and discover its rich Anglo-Norman heritage.

Founded around 1193 by Geoffrey FitzRobert, a close companion of William Marshal, Kells Priory formed part of the establishment of the medieval town of Kells during the Anglo-Norman consolidation of Leinster.

Today, extensive remains survive, including the nave, chancel, lady chapel, and cloister, along with structures such as the infirmary, workshop, kitchen, bread oven, and mill. The site is enclosed by substantial medieval defences, which have earned it the nickname “The Seven Castles of Kells”, highlighting its unique fortified character.

Practical information
Guided tours are available throughout the summer season, from June to August 2027, offering insight into the history, architecture, and daily life of the priory. The site can also be explored independently at any time.
