Event Concert

The Musicales de Normandie opens its edition of the European Year of the Normans in Fécamp with an exceptional event dedicated to history, music, and heritage.
In the majestic setting of the Abbey of the Holy Trinity, The Correspondances Ensemble presents “Sacres!”, an immersive experience where music dialogues with architecture to bring to life the great ceremonies of royal coronation.

The choice of Fécamp holds particular significance. Formerly the capital of the Dukes of Normandy before Rouen, the city occupies a central place in Norman history. The Abbey of the Holy Trinity notably houses the graves of Richard I of Normandy, known as Richard the Fearless, the great-grandfather of William the Conqueror, and of his son Richard II, the grandfather of the future duke and king.
Fécamp is also one of the major centers of musical influence in medieval Europe. Under the impetus of William of Volpiano and then his disciple John of Ravenna, the abbey plays a major role in the organization, teaching, and dissemination of liturgical music. This influence contributes to the rise of Gregorian chant as a common repertoire in Western Europe and participates in the emergence of the foundations of musical notation. In this respect, Fécamp appears as one of the essential hubs for the birth of Western art music.

The program “Sacres!” celebrates this heritage by retracing several centuries of musical history through coronation ceremonies. From medieval plainchant to great motets of the modern era, it highlights the transmission and evolution of musical traditions that accompany the rites of power.
Under the direction of Sébastien Daucé, the Correspondances Ensemble transforms the abbey into a vast performance space. Singers, instrumentalists, and children's voices inhabit the monument in multiple spatial configurations, making the architecture a true actor in the staging. Processions, music, and ceremonial displays immerse the audience in the heart of the ritual in an experience that goes beyond the framework of a traditional concert.
The journey concludes with the coronation of Louis XIV in Reims in 1654. Designed as a true sacred opera, this creation combines musical richness, spatial arrangement, and symbolic force to revive one of the most significant ceremonies in European history.

By opening the Musicales de Normandie in Fécamp, this event resonates with the history of William the Conqueror, Norman heritage, and the lasting influence of Normandy in the construction of European musical culture. An invitation to rediscover an iconic monument, an exceptional legacy, and over six centuries of musical creation.
