How the Normans influence us
Legacy Art Installation

This permanent art installation, created by children and young people from Battle, explores the lasting impact of Norman culture, from the medieval period to the present day. It celebrates diversity and encourages shared cultural understanding.

Students aged 5 to 18 design individual tiles inspired by different aspects of Norman life, including architecture, food, clothing, transport, warfare, law, religion, and daily life. Using a wide range of materials — from pencils and pastels to felt tips and acrylic paint — they express their interpretation of the Norman legacy.

Each class selects a design that best represents its theme. These designs are then reinterpreted by older art students in terracotta, forming a large-scale mosaic installation displayed on a central outdoor wall in the town. Visible to both residents and visitors, the artwork stands as a lasting reminder of the Millennium commemorations.

The project involves four schools, as well as a group of home-educated children. Community members contribute as storytellers, artists, and mentors, inspiring participants through illustrated talks and creative activities.

An information panel accompanies the installation, explaining its origins and significance in marking the millennium of the birth of William, Duke of Normandy. The panel appears in multiple languages, including English and French.

Through this project, young people gain a deeper understanding of their Norman heritage while connecting with a wider European story. The installation invites visitors to reflect on shared history and cultural links across regions and generations.
