Illustrated Talk: “Waterford in Norman Ireland” by Professor Seán Duffy

Exploring Norman Ireland through the story of Ireland’s second city

This illustrated talk by Professor Seán Duffy explores the latest research on Norman Waterford and its place within Norman Ireland. The lecture offers a fresh perspective on key historical narratives and well-known accounts of the Normans in Waterford.

Waterford stands at the heart of this history, notably as the site of the marriage of Aoife and Strongbow in 1170, following Strongbow’s capture of the city in August of that year. This event marks a turning point in Irish history, famously described by Giraldus Cambrensis as taking place “amid the smouldering ruins of the city.”

The city retains some of Ireland’s finest surviving Norman walls and mural towers and plays a central role as Ireland’s second city in the development of the Norman colony. This talk re-examines these themes in light of Millenium 2027 – European Year of the Normans and recent historical findings.
