Irish Walled Towns Network Annual Conference 2027

Stonemasonry in Ireland in the Anglo-Norman Period

Founded in 2005, the Irish Walled Towns Network brings together historic walled towns across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Supported by the Heritage Council, the network works in partnership with local authorities and community groups in its 33 member towns.

While some towns have earlier Viking origins, most are founded during the Anglo-Norman period and are closely linked to this chapter of Irish history. Today, they preserve important archaeological remains alongside lasting cultural influences visible in placenames, customs and family names.

In 2027, the Network’s annual conference focuses on stonemasonry during the Anglo-Norman period. The programme explores the skills, techniques and craftsmanship that shape many of Ireland’s historic towns and monuments and highlights their enduring legacy in the built environment.
