In the Wake of William (1027–2027)

This project symbolically retraces the voyage of La Mora, William the Conqueror’s legendary ship, from Barfleur in Normandy to Pevensey in England, celebrating Normandy’s rich maritime heritage and the shared history of both sides of the English Channel.

The crossing is undertaken aboard the DREKNOR, an authentic replica of the Gokstad Viking ship, officially recognized as a vessel of historic significance. Rather than carrying passengers, the ship makes a series of stops in Normandy and England, where visitors can explore it while it is moored and take part in a wide range of public activities.

At each port of call, the ship becomes a living educational resource, open to everyone. Guided tours, cultural interpretation, and conversations with the crew offer visitors the opportunity to discover early medieval seafaring traditions, learn about William the Conqueror’s invasion of England, and understand the vital role of the sea in shaping European connections.

Combining culture, heritage, and cross-Channel cooperation, the project helps strengthen awareness of the shared history and common heritage linking the two shores of the English Channel.

Please note: The schedule of port calls may change depending on weather conditions to ensure the safety of both the vessel and its crew.
