The Language of Legend
How the words we speak and the stories we tell were changed and enriched by the Norman Conquest
Discover how the words we speak and the stories we share evolve through the impact of the Norman Conquest.
The conquest of 1066 transforms the English language, driving its transition from Old English to Middle English and introducing around 10,000 French words—more than 7,000 of which remain in use today. This project celebrates that linguistic legacy through creative writing, community participation, and public events rooted in the places and stories of Hastings and its surrounding area.
The programme unfolds across three key strands:
- Anthology – ReConquest: Tales of a Reborn Town: A collection of flash fiction and poetry structured around ten themes, including Food & Drink, Love, Nature, and Journeys. Local writers contribute through community groups and an open call for Hastings residents. The anthology features 66 pieces and launches during Hastings Week (October 2026), with prompts inspired by local heritage and everyday life.
- Live performance events: Selected writers present their work at a preview event during the Hastings Book Festival (September 2026) and at the official launch during Hastings Week.
- Children’s interactive workshop and exhibition: A hands-on experience for primary school children explores how the Norman Conquest shapes language and legend through writing, drawing, and craft activities. Participants’ creations form part of an exhibition hosted at Hastings libraries or museum.
