Norman Durham: Castle and City

This exhibition explores the origins of Durham Castle, commissioned by William the Conqueror, and traces the development of the city under Norman rule.

Artefacts, manuscripts, and findings from the archaeological excavation of the Norman Chapel (c.1080) reveal daily life in the Castle—its people and animals, food culture, and more—at a pivotal moment in the expansion of Norman power in northern England. The building itself forms a central part of the exhibition, showcasing new discoveries in wall painting and architectural analysis. These findings highlight the early phases of the Castle’s development, including evidence of a Norman-period tower and the remarkable Romanesque doorways and windows from the mid-12th century.

The exhibition also presents the enduring legacy of the Norman Castle, illustrating its continuous use as a military, diplomatic, and social hub, and later as a college of Durham University. Understanding these later functions sheds light on the Castle’s earlier structure and purpose.

A final section presents ongoing, cutting-edge work that monitors the effects of climate change on the stonework, alongside extensive conservation efforts—both digital and physical—to preserve the Castle for future generations. Norman architecture continues to inspire innovation today.

This project forms part of "Normans in the North", a collaborative programme involving four cultural institutions in North-East England: Durham Castle, Durham Cathedral, The Auckland Project, Newcastle Castle, and Blackfriars Restaurant. Together, they offer three exhibitions and a visitor experience dedicated to the history and legacy of the Normans in the region.
