Study Day "The Normans in Atlantic Globalization"

The academic community of the University of Caen Normandy (ERLIS, HisTeMé, Maritime Pole, MRSH) takes advantage of Millenium to offer a new perspective on Norman history and highlight lesser-known episodes. The event notably questions the links between the Norman expeditions conducted in Europe between the 11th and 13th centuries and those carried out in the Atlantic space in the 16th and 17th centuries, in order to better understand the place of the Normans in the dynamics of globalization. Bringing together researchers and curators from Norman institutions, the event contributes to expanding the regional historical narrative beyond the European framework and to better grasping the role played by the Normans in exchanges, explorations, and circulations on an Atlantic scale. "Normans in Atlantic globalization in the 16th and 17th centuries" is organized in two parts. A study day is held at the House of Research in Human Sciences at the University of Caen Normandy. It is complemented by two round tables at the Château de Caen, aimed at promoting the dissemination of knowledge to a broader audience, particularly schools. The study day gathers specialists from Norman university institutions around Norman explorations in America and West Africa. The discussions analyze their contribution to regional economic development as well as to France's commercial and geopolitical relations in the 16th and 17th centuries. This period is seen as the heir to a long maritime tradition forged between the 11th and 14th centuries and as a pivotal stage in the rise of future expeditions to Canada, Louisiana, and the Caribbean in service of the Kingdom of France.
