About the Shadows: The Dawn of Photography in the Channel Islands
A celebration of the experimental beginnings of photography in the Channel Islands, through the perspective of the family and friends of Victor Hugo during his exile.
A study of what the French exiles, nostalgic for their homeland, found familiar in the landscapes, inhabitants, and language of the islands, as well as in their shared Norman heritage.
François-Victor Hugo, the youngest son of Victor Hugo, was fascinated by the traces of Norman heritage that he discovered were still present in the islands, through the language, culture, laws, and also the appearance of the islands and their inhabitants.
Through excerpts from books, poems, photographs, and other objects, the exhibition celebrates this shared identity. The exhibition also examines the artistic inspiration that the exiles found in the Channel Islands through the visual arts and literature, as well as the legacy left by this creative group.
The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the Victor Hugo Museum - Maison Vacquerie in Villequier, Normandy, Hauteville House, and the Victor Hugo Centre in Guernsey, Guernsey Heritage, and the Jersey Heritage Trust.
