Visualising Canterbury Castle

A digital experience of Canterbury's Norman Castle

Canterbury Castle (c.1100–1125) stands as one of the earliest examples of Norman castles in Kent and forms part of a series of royal fortifications built between Dover and London. This project presents a new digital visualisation of the castle’s Norman keep, available to explore on site at Canterbury Castle.

Using a smartphone, visitors access digital reconstructions that show how the castle appears in the mid-12th century. Augmented reality binoculars also allow visitors to explore the castle’s interior spaces and discover its rooms.

Developed by Canterbury Christ Church University, the project is funded by the Castle Studies Trust and delivered in partnership with Canterbury City Council.

The experience features throughout the year, with selected elements accessible at Canterbury Castle during regular opening hours.
