Wallingford 1066: Before and After

Discover Wallingford’s remarkable role in the story of 1066. This special exhibition at Wallingford Museum explores the town’s history from its Saxon origins to its pivotal place in the Norman Conquest and beyond. Still surrounded by 9th-century earthworks built under King Alfred, Wallingford stands as a key strategic site in English history.

The exhibition places the events of 1066 in context, showing how William the Conqueror arrives in Wallingford to cross the River Thames and secure the submission of English leaders before his coronation in London. It also highlights the impact of the great royal castle built here in 1067, which becomes one of the most important strongholds in the Thames Valley.

Through archaeological discoveries and historical records, the exhibition brings to life the everyday experiences of the town’s inhabitants. Finds from over 100 local excavations, combined with documentary sources, reveal how people understand and respond to major historical events. A detailed model of Wallingford Castle and displays on later medieval history, including the civil war between Empress Matilda and King Stephen, add further depth to the story.

The Wallingford Panel
A major highlight of the exhibition appears in July with the unveiling of the Wallingford Panel. This newly created and locally stitched artwork recreates the missing final scene of the Bayeux Tapestry, destroyed during the French Revolution. Commissioned by the museum and produced by a team of community volunteers, the panel presents a carefully researched interpretation of what the original ending may have shown—depicting William’s journey through Wallingford, Berkhamsted, and London.

The exhibition combines academic research with engaging and accessible displays. A family-friendly trail and hands-on activities invite younger visitors to explore the story through play and discovery.
