Wallingford 1066: The Crossing of the King
Where England’s future crosses the Thames

The Crossing of the King stands as the headline event of the Wallingford: Turning Point 1066 programme, a major heritage and cultural initiative exploring the town’s decisive role in one of the most important moments in English history.

From 30 July to 1 August 2027, Wallingford transforms into a vibrant Anglo-Saxon and Norman encampment. The Kine Croft and town centre come alive with immersive living history, recreating the atmosphere of England in the aftermath of 1066.

Wallingford holds a unique place in the story of the Norman Conquest. While the Battle of Hastings marks the military victory, it is here that the political transition truly takes shape. At Wallingford, Archbishop Stigand submits to William, paving the way for his recognition as King of England before his coronation. This moment firmly anchors the town in the creation of Norman England.

A spectacular opening
The event begins on the evening of Friday 30 July with the dramatic arrival of Viking longships at Wallingford Bridge, including the ceremonial arrival of William on the River Thames. This striking visual spectacle brings history to life at the very point where power shifts.
A medieval procession then winds through the town to the Market Place, followed by a lively Curfew Bell celebration featuring music, dancing and family entertainment. This tradition, still observed today, connects directly to Wallingford’s Norman past.

Living history and immersive experiences
Across Saturday 31 July and Sunday 1 August (10:00–16:00), the Kine Croft hosts a large living history encampment. Re-enactors recreate Anglo-Saxon and Norman life through military camps, craft demonstrations and daily activities.
Visitors explore:
• Combat demonstrations and battle training sessions
• Weapons, armour and equestrian displays
• Medieval cooking, textiles and crafts
• Insights into everyday life in the 11th century
Daily battle re-enactments showcase tactics and fighting styles, creating a powerful highlight of the weekend.

A town-wide celebration
The experience extends across the town centre. On Saturday afternoon, the Market Place hosts live battle music performances, adding to the festive medieval atmosphere.
Wallingford Museum remains open throughout the event, presenting the exhibition “Wallingford 1066: Before and After.” Visitors also discover the Wallingford Panel, a community-created continuation of the Bayeux Tapestry.

A family-friendly event
Children enjoy a wide range of interactive activities, including medieval games, storytelling, craft workshops and opportunities to meet historical characters. The programme offers an engaging and accessible experience for visitors of all ages.

Wallingford 1066: The Crossing of the King combines history, spectacle and community participation. It highlights Wallingford’s pivotal role in shaping Norman England while offering a memorable and immersive cultural experience.
