Wexford Walled Town Medieval Day – Norman Tour Edition
08 August 2027
Wexford Walled Town Medieval Day
A much-loved highlight of Wexford’s cultural calendar, Irish Walled Town Day will take on a distinctive Norman theme in 2027 as part of the Year of the Normans. Traditionally celebrating the town’s medieval heritage, this special edition will place an enhanced focus on Wexford’s pivotal role in Norman history.
This edition will highlight Wexford’s role in Norman history as the first major Irish town captured in 1169, as well as its position as the starting point for the county’s Norman Trail.
Visitors will be invited to immerse themselves in this legacy through themed signage, interpretation, and a wide-ranging programme of activities across the town.
These will include historical walking tours of key Norman sites, a specially curated “Wexford Camino” exploring religious traditions and feast day customs, and discovery trails along the town’s historic walls, gates and towers, supported by interpretation and visual enhancements.
At Selskar Priory and the Tower House, living history re-enactors will present elements of Norman life, including food, drink and material culture, alongside interactive activities such as the “Are You Norman?” surname exploration linking personal heritage to local history.
The programme will also involve community partners through activities such as falconry demonstrations, shield-making workshops, medieval games including chess, and storytelling sessions, and will feature a theatrical re-enactment of the marriage of Raymond le Gros and Basilla, sister of Strongbow, a key event in Wexford’s medieval history.
