Bayeux Doodle at Bottle Alley Art Market

A live, playful modern re-imagining of the Bayeux Tapestry

This project presents a scaled-down, doodle-style reinterpretation of the original 70-metre Bayeux Tapestry, created live at the Bottle Alley Art Market. Two or three artists observe the event as it unfolds, capturing passers-by and the atmosphere of the market in a side-view composition that echoes the visual style of the original tapestry.

Pre-designed decorative bands at the top and bottom reference the historic work and help visitors recognise the connection. The final artwork stretches to 7 metres in length and is installed along the back wall for audiences to view as they pass by. It is also designed to be rolled up for storage and future display.

This project builds on Bottle Alley’s tradition of live drawing and connects it to the wider celebration of the 1,000th anniversary of the Norman era. A social media documentary accompanies the creation process, extending the project beyond the event itself.
