Castles, Mottes and Monasteries
Delving into Historic Environment Record of Northern Ireland Archives and Collections

The Normans brought many changes to Ireland and left a huge legacy in Ulster. Today, numerous Norman monuments remain preserved for future generations in Northern Ireland’s landscape. Spectacular castles such as Carrickfergus Castle and Dundrum Castle; the evocative monasteries Greyabbey and Inch Abbey; and military earthworks including Clough, Duneight and Dromore mottes, all remind us of this legacy.

This exhibition showcases photographs, surveys, reconstruction drawings, and archaeological artefacts from Norman sites across Northern Ireland, preserved in the HERoNI archive.
