Contemporary Dance Performance

There is a sort of frantic marathon in the performance proposed by the Franco-Greek choreographer, dancer, and musician Katerina Andreou. Born in Athens and living in France, she designed this performance with Carte Blanche, the National Company of Contemporary Dance of Norway. A dance marathon inspired by those of the 1920s in the United States, as told in the cinematic masterpiece They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? by Sydney Pollack (1969).

A long bench crosses the stage. It will serve as a seat, a promontory, or an obstacle. One after another, the performers observe each other, measure themselves, encourage each other. Some dance, others watch, participate in the momentum, encourage, actors or witnesses of the choreography. They weigh each other up. They initiate a movement towards one another. The seconds join the firsts. The solos and duets merge into a multiple yet singular troupe. It is a race without a winner, an inquiry into duality, couples, a free interpretation of the “fragments of the discourse of love.”

Romanticism is here on the skin, in the gestures. A glance, a push, an embrace. The sound universe attunes the bodies, as if carried by a shared urgency. They go to the limits of the trial, of the performance with a feverish energy. There arises an impression of perfectly controlled chaos, guided by a carefully orchestrated score.
