Chivalry and Warfare: William the Conqueror’s Conflicts with Normandy’s Neighbouring Powers
William the Conqueror waged a harsh war and repression in England, far removed from what might be considered morally chivalrous conduct. Yet when campaigning in France against Normandy's neighbouring territories, he engaged in a form of civil warfare governed by codes of courtesy, marked by episodes of chivalric behaviour such as mock combats and lenient treatment of noble captives.
Examining this contrast, in dialogue with British historians such as John Gillingham and Matthew Strickland, offers fresh perspectives on certain medieval chronicles and even on some scenes depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry.
Ultimately, did chivalry find its way into England through these developments?
