Dromore Motte Walk & Talk

Join the Historic Environment Division for an informative guided tour at Dromore Motte, led by an archaeologist from the State Care team.

Dromore Motte is a well-preserved Anglo-Norman motte-and-bailey castle located on a bend of the River Lagan. The motte rises to approximately 12.2 metres above a surrounding ditch, with the river forming a natural defence to the south and a roughly square bailey attached.

Archaeological evidence shows that the summit is originally enclosed by a timber palisade, while an outer bank-and-ditch system protects the eastern, northern, and north-western sides. The site’s elevated position provides strategic control over the valley, making it one of the finest surviving Norman earthworks in Ulster.
