Exultet Festival - Sounds and images of Norman Europe

from 15 October 2027

to 18 October 2027

Festival dedicated to sacred music and medieval heritage, in relation to the tradition of the precious liturgical manuscripts of the Exultet (10th-13th century) preserved in Bari.

These are long rolls of parchment (4 or 5 meters) used during the Easter liturgy between the 10th and 13th centuries, characterized by portions of text, musical notations, and depictions of sacred scenes.
Made in Bari in the scriptorium of the Monastery of San Benedetto or the Cathedral, they were unrolled on the ambo, and while the deacon intoned the chant, the faithful could observe the accompanying images displayed upside down compared to the text.

The program of the Festival, in its 2027 edition connected with the Millennium-Year of the Normans, combines concerts of sacred music (with the participation of international ensembles, particularly Norman and Norwegian) and public conferences on medieval art, medieval history, and liturgical music.

Events take place in emblematic locations of heritage (cathedral and other religious buildings and heritage sites in the historic center), integrating the festival into a path of valorization of the religious and historical-artistic heritage of the Middle Ages.
