The great celebration of the Normans

The Time of Feasting – The Great Celebration of Normandy
The municipality of Barneville-Carteret is organizing a festive and cultural weekend celebrating the history, traditions, skills, and friendliness that shape Norman identity, through an immersive, participatory, and intergenerational experience.
For two days, residents, visitors, families, and history enthusiasts discover a rich program blending historical heritage, craftsmanship, playful practices, and gastronomy. Demonstrations, workshops, shows, and times for exchange punctuate this lively exploration of the territory.
An immersion in history and craftsmanship
The weekend revolves around a historical camp recreated by the Cotentin and Cotte de Mailles association. This living village immerses visitors in the lifestyles, trades, and artisanal techniques of the medieval and Norman era.
Artisans showcase their skills and transmit ancestral gestures: coin minting, calligraphy with a quill, wood carving, willow work, leathercraft, and the creation of utility objects. Textile arts also hold an important place with demonstrations of weaving, naalbinding – a Scandinavian knitting technique – and embroidery inspired by the Bayeux stitch.
Impressive and accessible activities
Demonstrations of medieval fencing punctuate the weekend. With commentary, they allow visitors to understand the evolution of weapons, armor, and combat techniques, placing them back in their historical context.
Medieval and Renaissance dances extend this immersion through costumes, music, and choreographies inspired by past festivities.
On Saturday, April 24, the TEC NOR association organizes a time dedicated to traditional Norman games and sports. This initiative fosters exchanges between generations and highlights playful practices that have long rhythms of local life.
A gastronomic highlight
On Sunday, April 25, starting at 12:30 PM, a grand Norman banquet under a tent concludes the event. This moment of togetherness brings together up to a hundred guests around local products and specialties.
