Views on the Norman Sky in Art

The exhibition "Skies, My Normandy!" embarks on a discovery of the Norman sky, an unchanging support for our imagination and projections, which became an integral part of our identity in the 19th century.

Exploring the sky of Normandy in art is like embarking on a narrative that merges with the history of art. From the sky as a divine space, approached in the art of stained glass and medieval mosaic, to the sky of modern and contemporary artists, passing through classical and romantic painters, the exhibition aims to showcase the rich palette of Norman skies where, it is said, one can witness all four seasons in a single day.

Paintings, photographs, watercolors, drawings, engravings, and excerpts of text will illuminate the various ways to represent or qualify the Norman sky, questioning the mental image we have of it.

The exhibition features works by Norman and/or European artists, coming from Norman and/or European museums, and confronts ancient visions with contemporary creations. It takes visitors on a poetic journey where the sky, often treated in art as a mere element of the landscape, becomes the main focus of our attention and that of the artists.
