Conference by Jacques Guillaume

This conference explores the rise of the Norwegian merchant navy and its role in international maritime trade. It also sheds light on the connections between Norway and Rouen, where the significant presence of sailors and Norwegian interests in the early 20th century is partly linked to the development of this fleet.

Starting from the 19th century, Norway gradually established itself as one of the major nations in global maritime transport. While some states dominate trade through their goods and shipping companies, it specializes in international transport and develops a fleet recognized for its modernity, reliability, and adaptability.

Reflecting on the origins of this success, the conference analyzes the geographical, economic, and historical factors that favored the rise of the Norwegian fleet, before addressing the contemporary challenges of global maritime transport and the new opportunities related to technological innovation and the exploitation of offshore resources.
