The Legend of Mathilde
from 03 July 2027
to 31 August 2027
A contemporary tapestry depicting the life of Matilda of Flanders, by Olympe Ramakrishna
The Legend of Matilda is a monumental contemporary tapestry recounting the life of Matilda of Flanders in ten significant scenes.
Made on linen and combining painting, textile printing, and embroidery, the work draws inspiration from both the Bayeux Tapestry and contemporary visual language.
Measuring approximately ten meters long, this creation highlights a major female figure in Norman history, often overshadowed by her husband, William the Conqueror. A princess of Flanders, duchess of Normandy, queen of England, patron, and powerful woman, Matilda played an essential role in the consolidation of the duchy and in the epic that led to the conquest of England in 1066.
In a language that is both narrative and symbolic, this tapestry invites the public to rediscover the life and legacy of Matilda of Flanders while opening a reflection on the place of women in history, their contribution to major events, and how their memory has been transmitted through the centuries.
The work will be presented in Normandy, Flanders, the United Kingdom, and Guernsey in 2027.
