The Millennium Medieval Festival

The Millennium Medieval Festival is taking over the Abbey of Fontaine-Guérard for a grand historical celebration dedicated to Norman heritage and the Middle Ages. Through reenactments, performances, demonstrations, and discoveries of everyday medieval life, the event brings to life a period that profoundly influenced the history of Normandy and Europe. Designed as an immersive experience that is festive, playful, and educational, this event highlights both military life and civilian life in the 11th and 12th centuries. It also serves as the starting point for two summer exhibitions: "Itineraries of the Norman Builders," which explores the connections between Normandy and Sicily from a European perspective, and "Norman Abbeys: Medieval Know-How and Contemporary Views." Several historical reenactment companies trace nearly two centuries of history, from the birth of William the Conqueror to the time of Richard the Lionheart. Among them, The Cold Sea Merchants, the Norman Brotherhood, the Companions of Ancient Times, and Of Gules and Silver recreate camps, equipment, combat techniques, and daily gestures based on rigorous historical sources. Through their installations and activities, visitors discover housing, cooking, blacksmithing, crafts, clothing, medicine, games, poetry, and even the traditions of courtly love. Weapon and combat demonstrations also illustrate the evolution of military practices between the early 11th century and the late 12th century. The event also offers an artistic program featuring the street theater company Nessamelda, which humorously and energetically revisits the great epic poems and significant episodes of the Norman saga, notably the battles of Hastings and Stamford Bridge. Throughout the weekend, medieval dances, shows, participatory activities, and theatrical performances enliven the site. A medieval market enhances the experience by showcasing artisans who present their skills, creations, and techniques inherited from the Middle Ages.
