Celebrating Norman Heritage through music old and new 

Recently described in The Guardian as “an uplifting and rewarding hit,” Music@Malling brings outstanding musicians into the heart of the community with concerts and outreach held in historic venues in and around West Malling, Kent.  

Running from the 24th September to 3rd October 2027, British and French music from across the centuries will feature across 25 events with artists including Ensemble Variances, Chamber Domaine, The London Sinfonietta, Fretwork, Marian Consort, James Pearson and the Ronnie Scott’s All Stars. Contemporary music will be woven through the programme and include site specific commissions from a fascinating cross-section of composers from the UK and France, highlighting Norman heritage and local landscapes.  

West Malling and its surrounding area were profoundly influenced by the Normans.  Music @ Malling venues range from Malling Abbey - founded in 1090 and today home to a closed order of Benedictine nuns; churches built Gundulf of Rochester; All Saint’s Church Tudeley -  a Norman church with a complete set of Marc Chagall windows; Rochester Cathedral and Castle; St.Leonard’s Tower - an early Norman stone keep dating from 1070. The programme also includes an exhibition and guided tours exploring this unique history.

Music@Malling concerts and year around outreach take their inspiration from this rich heritage and the juxtaposition of old and new. Join the programme to  celebrate the Year of the Normans in the heart of Kent.
