As part of Millenium and the celebration of Norman heritage, an evening dedicated to the Norman language and regional cultural identity is taking place at the Douits hall in Barneville-Carteret, with the participation of Rémi Pezeril (the FALE).

At 6 PM, screening of the documentary My Native Language by Rémi Mauger.

The film explores the issue of the disappearance of Norman through a sensitive and lively road movie on the roads of Normandy. The director meets the last speakers of its dialects and offers a valuable inventory of this language, deeply linked to the history and identity of the territory.

At the heart of the story are his parents, aged 96 and 90 at the time of filming, who continue to speak the patois with naturalness and humor. Their words embody the transmission of an intangible heritage that is now fragile.

A notable exchange in the film encapsulates this approach:

— "What are you doing it for?" asks the father.

— "To keep a trace, because you are the last," replies the director.

— "We are the last to speak patois? Well, it's bound to be lost."

Through these testimonies, My Native Language rightly questions the place of regional languages in contemporary society and highlights the importance of preserving this living memory.

The screening will be followed by a discussion.
