Norman Carlisle

A year of events celebrating the Norman history of Carlisle

Norman Carlisle is a year-long programme celebrating Carlisle’s Norman heritage through a series of cultural events and experiences across the city’s major historic landmarks, including Carlisle Castle, Carlisle Cathedral and Tullie Museum.

Carlisle Cathedral highlights its Augustinian heritage, while Tullie Museum presents video installations and projections inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry in collaboration with the British Museum from 22 May to 4 July. The programme brings Carlisle’s Norman history to life through immersive and engaging cultural experiences.

A community-focused medieval feast takes place at Carlisle Castle, animated by street performers and designed to bring residents and visitors together in a festive atmosphere. Additional projections are showcased throughout the city, while collaborations with mural artists help celebrate and promote Carlisle’s rich heritage in public spaces.

As Carlisle welcomes the Tour de France route, the city also enhances its existing programme of events with a dedicated Norman heritage offer, creating new opportunities for visitors to discover its history and cultural identity.
